Crystal Ball Projections for 2009
January 2009
2009 is the year we all wish we had crystal balls to tell us what the year will bring. In this newsletter I offer to you my job related predictions for the year. Let us all hope that our new president and the economic stimulation packages fulfill their promises for growing the economy.
In addition to search, I have accepted a new role that continues my career development work started with the Getting to the Top programs. I am Associate Director of Alumni Career Services for UCLA Anderson School of Management, providing career resources for alumni.
Lastly, check out the upcoming Getting to the Top program on February 19, an article on “8 Ways to Make Yourself More Marketable”, and our new searches. Yes – we are still getting new and interesting searches! To a hopeful and prosperous New Year!
Sincerely,a
Kathy

Crystal Ball Projections for 2009
By Kathy Ullrich
Even as an optimist I foresee two quarters of the economy declining before we might begin to detect improvements. We see this already with daily announcements of major job losses at Yahoo, X, and even Microsoft who has never had a government-defined job loss (one where you have to report, beyond performance-related lay-offs.) However, despite the job losses, job seekers and businesses trying to remain afloat can find some sectors with a glimmer of growth and hope.
From an executive recruiter perspective, October and the first half of November was dismal. Companies suffered ‘deer in headlights’ paralysis, cancelling, freezing or stalling any decisions about hiring until they knew more about what the economy would bring. Many companies put off lay-off decisions until after the holidays, lay-offs we now see.
But there are pockets of hiring. The second half of November through to now, my phone has been ringing with potential new clients and searches. Companies may be slower to contract, interview (one client took two months to schedule the first phone interview,) and make hiring decisions, but they are still hiring for critical needs. Now look into my crystal ball for projections on the market.
